Jerry Stackhouse likens Tim Corbin to Dean Smith

New Vanderbilt basketball coach Jerry Stackhouse compared Commodores baseball coach Tim Corbin to legendary North Carolina basketball coach Dean Smith and said he hopes his program is able to mimic Corbin's.

Corbin on Wednesday led Vanderbilt to its second national championship in six years by beating Michigan 8-2 in the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

Stackhouse was there to see it.

"What Coach Corbin has built over there with baseball is phenomenal," he said Thursday on the SEC basketball coaches' summer teleconference. "I liken him really to Coach Dean Smith in how he's able to just be a pillar of consistency."

Stackhouse, 44, is a North Carolina native who played for Smith (1993-95) and led the Tar Heels to a Final Four while also being named the National Player of the Year by Sports Illustrated.

In his short time at Vanderbilt, Stackhouse said he already has been able to glean some coaching tips from Corbin.

"He does it the right way and has been a great mentor for me so far just to see how he works with those boys, really pushing them both in the classroom as well as on the field," Stackhouse said. "He's a great example to follow."

While the claim can be made that this is the greatest Vanderbilt baseball team in history, Stackhouse inherited a basketball team that is among the worst. The Commodores posted a 9-23 overall record and went 0-18 in the SEC.   

 Stackhouse said he would not hesitate to use the success of the baseball team, which won 59 games, as an example to his players.

"Definitely their success and momentum is something that we want to ride and aspire for our guys to push for those same goals," Stackhouse said. "Because we feel that it's attainable. Obviously, we've got holes to fill going forward, but the guys who are here are starting to turn the corner. They can start setting the tone for that."
