Sir Ian McKellen, Sam Smith and Little Mix march for LGBT rights at London Pride 2019
Sir Ian McKellen, Sam Smith, and Little Mix girls Jade Thirlwall and Leigh-Anne Pinnock were among the celebrities who marched in London’s Pride parade on 6 July.
Lord Of The Rings star Sir Ian wore a Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays t-shirt, supporting the work the organisation does to help the parents of lesbian/gay/bisexual and transgender children, while pop star Sam posed for selfies with fans as he made his way into Trafalgar Square.
The parade will celebrate 50 years of activism and protests, after the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City, and this year has seen the introduction of a new World Area at Golden Square in Soho, in a bid to increase the visibility of the black, Asian and minority ethnic LGBT+ community.
Elsewhere, Loose Women stars Denise Welch wore a rainbow-coloured suit as she took part in the parade; she has long been a supporter of the community; her son Matty Healy was named ally of the year at the 2019 Diva Awards.
She was joined by her fellow panelists Jane Moore and Nadia Sawalha, along with ITV stars Booby Norris, Dr Raj Singh.
Little Mix star Jade and Leigh-Anne marched with trans children’s charity Mermaids.
Mermaids tweeted: ‘We’re incredibly excited that Jade and Leigh-Anne from will be joining Mermaids on the #TogetherInPride bus for the Parade.
‘Their visible support of trans kids means the world to so many young transgender people and their families.’
