The story begins in 2012 with Omaha-born mechanic Dave Kroupa, who is back on the market following a breakup. He discovers Liz Golyar, a bowling enthusiast with a rebellious side shown in some old footage when she brashly turns off security cameras, while using a dating app. Dave also begins dating Cari Farver at the same time, presumably on a casual basis. But when Farver starts acting strangely and starts sending Dave a boatload of threatening texts and emails, things start to go dark. As the virtual abuse intensifies, the screen fills with derogatory language and the soundtrack becomes erratic. When Golyar's house inexplicably catches fire, the plot becomes more complex.
