Henman: Murray and Serena Williams will be 'one of the favourites' to win mixed doubles title

Former British No 1 Tim Henman insists Andy Murray and Serena Williams will be 'one of the favourites' to win the mixed doubles at Wimbledon should the duo pair up this week.

Sportsmailreported on Monday that Murray was moving nearer to a mixed doubles partnership with the 23-time Grand Slam champion.

And despite their lack of experience on the doubles court together, Henman believes Murray and Serena will be among the leading contenders to go all the way at SW19.

'Let's wait and see, I hope it does it happen,' Henman, who is an ambassador for HSBC, told Sportsmail.

'They'll certainly be one of the favourites that's for sure.

'They're great singles and doubles players and put them together I think they'll be one of the favourites for the mixed doubles if it's what happens.' 

Two-time Wimbledon champion Murray will make his highly-anticipated SW19 return on Wednesday alongside Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the men's doubles.

The 32-year-old had to pull out of Wimbledon on the eve of the tournament last year and is continuing his comeback from hip resurfacing surgery.

Murray won the Queen's men's doubles title alongside Feliciano Lopez earlier this month but has joined up with Herbert, who was knocked out of the Wimbledon men's singles by Kevin Anderson on Monday, for the first time.

Henman has acknowledged the test of linking up with a new partner but has admitted that playing doubles is a good way for the former world No 1 to continue to work his way back.

'It's great to see him out there first and foremost obviously on the back of an amazing week at Queen's,' he added.

'It's not easy playing with a new partner and someone you've never played with before but I just think it's great this sort of stepping stone, the opportunity he's got of using the doubles competition hopefully to accelerate his journey back to singles.

'It's just the element of how they gel as a partnership. If they can get through their first round then I think you've got a chance of building some momentum.'
