"Avengers: Endgame" Surpasses "Avatar" as Highest-Grossing Movie of All Time

After obliterating nearly every box office record imaginable in its opening weekend, Avengers: Endgame has officially become the highest-grossing movie of all time.

As noted by Deadline, this major milestone was announced by Marvel’s president Kevin Feige during a Comic-Con panel on Saturday, July 20. At the time of his announcement, there was a $500,000 gap between Avengers: Endgame and the former record-holder, Avatar, which raked in $2.7897 billion at the box office during its reign, but that gap was expected to close by the end of the weekend. “Thanks to you, Avengers: Endgame is the biggest film of all-time,” Feige told fans at the event.

The Disney-Marvel victory was, in part, due to the June re-release of Avengers: Endgame that contained a deleted scene. “There will be a version going into theaters with a bit of a marketing push with a few new things at the end of the movie,” Feige told ScreenRant last month. “If you stay and watch the movie, after the credits, there’ll be a deleted scene, a little tribute, and a few surprises.”

This particular milestone isn’t entirely surprising, given how well Endgame performed at the box office during its opening weekend. Despite its three-hour run time (prompting all that concern about bathroom breaks), it quickly became the biggest worldwide debut and biggest domestic debut of all time, with film critics noting that it set a new precedent for the potential of film sales.

Considering it took nearly a decade for a movie to top James Cameron’s Avatar for total box office winnings, it remains to be seen what film will eventually surpass Endgame. If this year’s Comic-Con is any indication, however, we wouldn’t be shocked to see another super-hero movie take the prize in years to come.
