Blood

Solids and liquids make up blood. Water, salts, and protein make up the plasma, which is the liquid component. Your blood contains more than 50% plasma. Red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets make up blood's solid portion. The body receives nutrition, oxygen, and waste elimination through the blood, which is a fluid that circulates continuously. Blood is "thicker" than pure water because it is largely liquid and contains many suspended cells and proteins. More than a gallon of blood is present in the average person.

Blood Disorders

  • Blood spilling out of blood vessels may be evident, such as from a wound that penetrates the skin, in the case of hemorrhage (bleeding). It could take some time to notice internal bleeding.

  • White blood cells proliferate improperly and circulate through the blood in leukemia, a kind of blood cancer. The aberrant white blood cells make infection-related illness more common than usual.

  • Anemia is a blood condition characterized by abnormally few red blood cells. Although the fact that anemia frequently has no obvious symptoms, it can induce fatigue and shortness of breath.

  • Red blood cells with sickle cell disease periodically lose their correct form due to a hereditary defect (appearing like sickles, rather than discs). Blood cells with abnormal shapes collect in tissues, harming organs and producing discomfort.

  • Thrombocytopenia Unusual low levels of blood platelets. Bleeding could result from severe thrombocytopenia.

  • A blood clot in a deep vein, typically in the leg, is known as a deep venous thrombosis (DVT). Due to the possibility that they could become dislodged and move to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism, DVTs are risky (PE).

  • A myocardial infarction (MI), often known as a heart attack, happens when a blood clot forms suddenly in one of the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart.

Blood Treatments

  • Drugs are used to eradicate cancer cells. Chemotherapy is commonly used to treat leukemias and lymphomas.

  • Red blood cells from a donor are taken out of their plasma and placed in a tiny bag for transfusion. Blood loss is replaced by transfusing the concentrated red blood cells into the recipient.

  • Platelet transfusion: A blood donor's platelets are concentrated in a plastic bag after being removed from the rest of the blood. Only when platelet counts reach extremely low levels is it usually necessary to transfuse platelets.

  • Drugs that destroy parasites and bacteria help cure blood illnesses brought on by these pathogens.
