Herman Cain is tweeting from beyond the grave and people are very confused - 3 minutes read
I pray that when I die — God-willing, many years from now — I no longer tweet. Please, I beg, let death at least release me from posting.
Herman Cain, who died less than two weeks ago, however, is still tweeting. And everyone is confused by that strange fact.
OK, obviously Cain — the former Republican candidate for president who died in July after being hospitalized with COVID-19 — was not actually tweeting. But his account responded to the news that former Vice President Joe Biden had selected California Sen. Kamala Harris as a running mate on the 2020 Democratic presidential ticket.
"Just in case you thought Biden's candidacy was going to be anything other than completely nuts, team Trump has released a new video," Cain's account posted on Wednesday.
At the time, Cain's account still had his photo and used the politician's name as its display name. It has since made clear the message was coming from a group called "The Cain Gang" and not Herman Cain himself (obviously).

Dr. Melanie Cain Gallo, Cain's daughter, posted on his website that the family intended to continue using their late father's platform. Thus, the tweet.
"We’ve decided here at Cain HQ that we will go on using this platform to share the information and ideas he believed in," Gallo wrote. "He often talked about the site going on once he was ready to step away from it. We had hoped he could enjoy reading it in his retirement, but he made it clear he wanted it to go on."
Still, folks were... let's say... curious... that Cain's account was attacking Democrats even after he died.
People were mostly careful and respectful when Herman Cain passed away from COVID-19, and boy that is going to disappear quickly now that his family and comms team have decided to keep tweeting out new political content under his name. https://t.co/dz6kTyJ4fQ — Don Moynihan () August 13, 2020
Herman Cain continuing to tweet in favor of Trump after dying from a disease he probably caught at a reckless Trump rally is a pretty decent encapsulation of why it’s a waste of time for Democrats to try and court Republican voters. — Josh Gondelman () August 13, 2020
The so called "scientists" scoff at hydroxychloroquine, but look, it brought Herman Cain back https://t.co/gksyFX39hB — Jonathan Chait () August 13, 2020
Herman Cain left behind a box of demo tweets that are being remixed and released by his label. — Dave Weigel () August 13, 2020
Despite the confused response from lots of people, Cain's account kept on posting. Come Friday the rebranded "Cain Gang" was lobbing attacks at Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and retweeting Rudy Giuliani.
2020 is very strange.
