Australia, it's so much about You.

However, I hear all the time how far the Down Under is. I always thought that Australia had it all- breathtaking beaches, incredible and unique landscape, people with open-minded hearts and easy-going lifestyle. As much as I am a big fan of the Aussie lifestyle, I fancy travelling to Europe to experience the older, traditional architecture and food. The only barrier for me to keep going is a distance of 20 hours in the air with a kid asking when we finally land?! Admittedly, most of you can relate to that. 

What if a small corner of Europe is just one hour away? What if there are corners in Australia that are underrated and unknown? Good news, Tasmania is only one hour away from Melbourne. "No way, it is cold and boring", some of you would say. Despite this feedback, my first visit to Tasmania left behind a feeling of curiosity, impression and something familiar down deep. I want to go back! Let me give you a million reasons to do so.

Since my daughter wanted a jacuzzi, Wrest Point Hotel seemed to be a good choice- Casino hotel with multiple wings at different prices. If you love the waterfront, restaurants choices, swimming pool facilities- it could be a solution for your weekend in Hobart.  

The modern history of the Australian city of Hobart (formerly 'Hobart Town', or 'Hobarton') in Tasmania dates to its foundation as a British colony in 1804 (Source: Wikipedia, 2020). The significant point for a visit- Battery Point. Just walk down the streets, and the European vibe follows you. Cafes, art shops, older historical buildings are accompanying you all the way. The more aged pier with yachts, fish and chips dining and traditional mini boutique shops are telling you the story of the Oldest Colonies in Australia.

Surreal views of the harbour as a reminder of where the history of European Australia started didn't let me go. I realised that Hobart, Tasmania is "Lost in time". I experienced the feeling of NO change since 1804. Please, Hobart, keep it this way! People have to remember and cherish the Beginning. One of the best breakfast experiences was Jackman and Ross with its signature dish- Salmon wrap. On a rainy day, its perfect, well any day really. Sit down, grab a Latte and watch time passing, close your eyes-you are kinda in 1800, London.

Well, we all know that Tassie Devils are the ones we come to Hobart for. Despite them living in our local Victorians’ Zoos, it's more authentic to admire these cute-evil faced little black animals in its Motherland-Tasmania. With several options, we chose Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, located just 35 minutes from Hobart CBD. The name ‘BONORONG’ is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning ‘native companion’. The Mumirimina people were taken out of their land and did not survive the early colonial period of Tasmania (Source: Bonorong Sanctuary, March 2020). With TripAdvisor Review rate 5.0/5.0 and facilities for rescuing injured animals, Bonorong Sanctuary became a Sanctuary, unique and also answers the question on how we can keep Aussie wildlife live and non-extinct. The sanctuary reminded me an animal’s farm where habitat is living in their own space, you can even feed the free-range kangaroos and pat a koala and watch the little sticking out noses of echidnas. With experienced guides, we were able to get closer to the Tassie devils and learn about their habits, food choices, lifestyle and monitor those black red sharp-eared animals in action. The first interesting fact is they were named Devils due to the scary sounds they make. The first settlers arrived to Tasmania in 1800s and heard an Evil sound, their first question was: If the Island is haunted? Later, they found out that Tassie devils are the ones. They eat meat, any meat-don’t put fingers near their mouth! Their sharp teeth can go through the skin and bone!.

With watching devils making circles in the section, the audience kept admiring and taking photos. They seemed to be actually Cute. The unfortunate part of the information guide is that Tasmania Devils are endangered. The recent Devil facial tumour disease (DFTD) is an aggressive non-viral clonally transmissible cancer which affects Tasmanian devils, a marsupial native to Australia. Its crucial to monitor these unique creatures in order for them not to get extinct! Imagine, we can lose those sharp teeth devils for good? I just said: “Tassie Devil, please, keep biting and stay for good”! My hopes are up for this amazing animal to survive. Are you planning to have a gateway to Tassie sooner?
