Top of the infrastructure list is a no-brainer: a charging network

Philip Lowe is currently doing the Reserve Bank governor equivalent of grabbing Scott Morrison by the lapels and screaming "build more infrastructure". Should the PM heed the message, there's an obvious place to start: a network of electric vehicle fast-charging stations along Australia’s main highways.

I get it. Conservatives and electric vehicles don't feel like the cosiest of fits.

But we should start recognising the election campaign theatrics for what they were. Up until April, EVs were fairly apolitical. I had constructive meetings with Coalition MPs and similarly constructive meetings with Labor MPs.

And constructing a mass network of fast-charging stations would perfectly satisfy the federal government’s current economic objectives. It would deliver a big national sugar hit during the construction phase and long-term productivity and economic benefits upon completion.
