‘Stranger Things’ actress Millie Bobby Brown puts her name on new Converse collection
“Stranger Things” is turning its approach to brand partnerships up to Eleven.
The Netflix NFLX, +1.93% hit, which dropped its third season on July 4, stars Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven (a.k.a. El, or Jane), a tween with telekinetic powers who has repeatedly saved her friends (and the world) from monsters invading from a parallel dimension that the kids call “the Upside Down.”
The show steeped in ’80s nostalgia has often featured the core Dungeons & Dragons–loving characters sporting Chuck Taylor sneakers from the Nike-owned NKE, +0.14% Converse. (The young actress also wore Converse shoes to the 2018 SAG Awards.) And now Brown is releasing a limited-edition sneaker collection with the brand on Thursday (which, naturally, is the 11th of July), which the actress revealed in an Instagram post on Monday:
The unisex “Millie By You” collection features a palette of pastels drawn from ocean sunsets, as well as quirky orca prints that highlight “Millie’s love for the ocean and its animals as well as DIY fashion,” according to the collaboration’s official website. “You’ll get to create a custom pair of Chucks with prints, colors, and materials curated by Millie.” The site hasn’t revealed the price of these sneakers yet, which will involve customizing the brand’s iconic “Hi” high-top sneaker, and the low-top “Ox” oxford shoes. Other customizable pairs of those same styles start at $75.
As the English actress, 15, shared in an Instagram Story on her own page: “Whales for me are the most majestic animals, and on the logo there’s just a beautiful, like, swimming whale. That is like a dream come true in a little circle.” Fans can start designing their own Eleven-inspired Chucks on Thursday at 10 a.m. Eastern time. Converse and Nike had not responded to a MarketWatch request for comment at press time.
But they’re just the latest brands piggybacking on 1980s-style consumerism for Netflix’s supernatural hit, which the streaming service revealed was watched by 40.7 million household accounts in the four days after its Independence Day release, with 18.2 million binge-watching the entire eight-episode season already.

Coca-Cola’s COKE, -1.40% 1985 recipe — “New Coke” — is featured prominently on the show this season, and the beverage giant even brought the famously ill-fated reformulation back in honor of the show, which is set in the summer of ’85. There have been “Stranger Things” clothing collaborations with Nike, H&M HNNMY, -0.28% , Forever 21, Levi’s LEVI, +0.65% and Havaianas sandals. The Restaurant Brands International–operated QSR, +0.64% Burger King QSR, +0.64% began flipping Upside Down Whoppers (yes, the burgers were served bottom-bun-side-up). Hasbro HAS, -0.19% released a limited-edition “Upside Down” My Little Pony.

The Wall Street Journal counted roughly 70 collaborative product tie-ins for this new season alone.
And the show itself — which heavily centers around a Middle America suburban mall this season — features prominent product placement, such as a shopping montage in the Gap GPS, -0.23% and J.C. Penney JCP, -1.74% ; characters sipping “New Coke” and snacking on the Pepsi PEP, -0.95% brands Tostitos and Doritos; two characters sharing the Mars candy M&Ms; and, as always, Eleven’s favorite food: Kellogg’s K, -1.70% Eggo waffles.
