Dogs are often far more than just pets, they quickly become members of the family. Everyone wants their dogs to be healthy, and it can be frustrating or even heartbreaking to see so many older family dogs who end up suffering from cancer. This seems to happen so much more often than it used to, but is that really the case? How do we tackle the question of why are there so many dogs who suffer from cancer now?

There are many different reasons that dogs are diagnosed with cancer, and there are several different causes that could help explain why the number of cases seems to spike in recent years. Some of these causes are things that can be tackled, but there are also some causes that are more or less side effects of other beneficial practices.

First, there are serious environmental toxins that can make cancer more likely to happen. If you're in an area with a lot of spraying because of bugs or agriculture, then outdoor dogs might be exposed to toxins that make cancer more likely.

Another reason is that many dog breeds with a genetic predisposition to cancer like huskies and pugs have exploded in popularity. This means a lot more cute dogs, but also a lot more dogs who are simply genetically inclined to end up with cancer.

There are also a limited number of cases where overuse of vaccines has caused cancer in dogs. Many vaccines are designed to be taken once or last multiple years per shot. If the same pet gets multiple vaccine shots in the exact same spot year after year, or even more than once a year, this could result in cancerous tumors.

However, the largest single cause is most likely the fact that more and more dogs are now inside dogs who are being taken care of with proper vaccines and vet checkups. Since dogs are living longer and longer, it makes sense that more elderly dogs mean more cancer is showing up.

This combination of factors is probably the single biggest reason dog cancer rates have spiked. More dogs that are genetically prone to cancer, fewer accidents and all of them are living longer and longer lives. Add that all together and it's suddenly easy to see why those numbers have been going up.
