Editor's note: This story has been updated.

The race to sign NBA free agents officially begins at 5:00 p.m. Sunday in Dallas, but the Mavericks are already at work attempting to retain one of their own.

Dwight Powell opted in to the final year of his current contract earlier this offseason, and the next step for the forward was to sign a potential extension with the Mavs.

First reported by the New York Times' Marc Stein and confirmed by SportsDay's Brad Townsend, an agreement could come together very quickly after the free agency window opens on Sunday afternoon with the Mavericks planning to offer Powell a 3-year, $33 million extension.
