The Meghan Markle Wimbledon Photos Drama Somehow Continues

Meghan Markle attended Wimbledon last week, and . . . people have, to a perhaps unexpected degree, had a whole lot to say about it. A quick recap: A day after Kate Middleton attended the tournament (where she started at Court 14 before moving to the Royal Box on Centre Court), Meghan went to watch her friend (and baby shower organizer) Serena Williams on Thursday. Meghan—two days before her son Archie’s christening that Saturday—was flanked by two of her college friends, Genevieve Hillis and Lindsay Roth, and dressed quite casually, in jeans and a white blazer.

All, generally, seemed to be normal, as far as high-profile royal appearances at Wimbledon go. That was until Sally Jones, a media consultant and former BBC reporter, told TMZ she was trying to take a photograph of Williams on the court when she was asked by “one of Meghan’s bodyguards” if she could not take photographs of Meghan. Jones told TMZ that she was told by the bodyguard, “She’s here in a private capacity.”

Jones has since chalked the whole thing up to the “celebrity-driven values of Team Sussex” in an essay for the Daily Mail, and accused Prince Harry and Meghan of thinking of themselves “more as A-list celebrities rather than royals carrying out their duties.” And this micro-controversy was kept alive on Wednesday when, of all people, Tatum O’Neal weighing in. A guest on Good Morning Britain, O’Neal—formerly married to tennis star John McEnroe—was asked about the story by (of course) Piers Morgan, who wrote about “no photos”–gate earlier this week. O’Neal did not hold back in her take: “To have a bodyguard muscle somebody out I just think is so tacky,” she said. “It’s so upsetting to me because if you think about Princess Diana and how absolutely inclusive she was and how she would never turn anyone away, and I just had so much hope for Meghan, I wanted her to be the next Princess Diana and it seems like it’s all about her, and it’s really upsetting me.” (Princess Diana's relationship with the press was, of course, in fact quite complicated.)

Amidst all of this discussion, it seems likely Meghan will return to Wimbledon before the tournament ends on Sunday, probably to watch Williams (who will play in the semifinals on Thursday, and then, if she wins, in the finals on Saturday.)
