New 'James Bond 25' Video Assures Fans That Fifth Daniel Craig 007 Movie Is Still Getting Made

Well, this is a random surprise. Presumably as a way to assure worried fans that the film is still going forward as intended, Eon Productions and related friends released this 60-second behind-the-scenes tease for the next James Bondmovie. It's NOT a trailer or a teaser or anything like that, although I imagine if studios thought they could get away with showing stuff like this in place of a trailer that they would. After all, it's clearly spoiler-free and yet makes the point that we're getting another Daniel Craig 007 movie. And at this early juncture, that's all you need.

I'd presume that this video is a response to various behind-the-scenes melodrama, including (but not limited to) Danny Boyle departing as director and being replaced by Cary Joji Fukunaga, Daniel Craig's on-set ankle injury and a crew member being injured by a controlled explosion that went wrong. A few more (hopefully minor) mishaps like this, and Eon and MGM may have to call this one James Bond: Turn Off The Dark. So, yeah, to the extent that casual viewers only peripherally pay attention to behind-the-scenes gossip, this video makes the case that things are allegedly running smoothly.

We don't know a ton about the plot of this fifth and presumably final Daniel Craig 007 adventure, just that it's a straight sequel to Spectre, complete with Léa Seydoux returning as Bond's apparent long term commitment. Jeffrey Wright's Felix Leiter will make a welcome return after sitting out Skyfalland Spectre, and he will pull a retired 007 back into peril. We don't have official word about whether Christoph Waltz will return as Blofeld, but it has been speculated (yes, speculation alert) that Rami Malek's arch villain is just Blofeld with a new face.

The challenges of making a 007 movie at a time when glorified Bond villains essentially rule the world and the bad guys at taking the highest levers of power has not been lost on Fukunaga or writers Scott Z. Burns, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. It will be interesting to see how 007 plays in a world where where G.I. Joe: Retaliationlooks more like a documentary every day. You can even make the case that a more fantastical "Hey, good does occasionally triumph over evil, and the public does react when bad stuff about the bad guys gets exposed!" adventure may play better as "escapist fantasy" than a more "007 in the era of Trump and Putin" melodrama.

That's not to say Bond 25 should entirely ignore politics or topical context, as frankly the 007 saga has long done best when it existed within the somewhat plausible confines of our real world, even if the emphasis was more on genre appropriation than cultural relevancy. Heck, in their own skewed way, both Kingsmanmovies were every bit as political as something like The Bourne Ultimatumor District 13. It'll be a challenging balancing act, but that's why they get the big bucks and I merely pass judgment after-the-fact.

I'm guessing we'll be getting a teaser (and a title) in late July/early August primed for Universal's Hobbs & Shaw(which itself should be getting a third trailer this week), since Universal will be distributing the Bond movie overseas. Ironically, the first teaser for Spectreplayed with Furious 7four long years ago, while the second trailer played with Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. I'm guessing we'll get a second trailer for James Bond: Turn Off The Darktied to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, although I guess Universal could cut one that could play with Catsas well.
