House rejects impeaching Trump

WASHINGTON—The House of Representatives on Wednesday rejected a resolution to impeach President Donald Trump for his remarks directed at four Democratic congresswomen. Despite resistance from Democratic Party leadership, Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, used a privileged resolution to bring the move to impeach to a floor vote. Democrats voted against the move 137-95, and no Republicans supported it.

Democrats on Tuesday passed a resolution condemning the president for his tweets on Sunday criticizing Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts.

House Democrats from moderate districts decried the potential fallout of the impeachment vote. “It’s not ideal for a lot of people to have that vote right now,” Rep. Katie Hill, D-Calif., said afterward, adding that if the House votes on impeaching Trump in the future, it should be when “we can make sure our constituents understand and can get behind [it].”

The president celebrated the news of the vote upon arriving in North Carolina for a campaign rally Wednesday night. “You see the overwhelming vote against impeachment, and that’s the end of it,” he told reporters. He later tweeted that “this should never be allowed to happen to another President of the United States again!”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told reporters that Democrats will focus on investigating the president through the work of various House committees.
