The film starts off in Belfast in 1974, with an intense and well-shot scene showing a small group of terrorists - three men and a woman - carrying out an attack in a bar that tragically results in the deaths of two children and their mother. Fleeing from the authorities, they find refuge in the peaceful coastal town of Gleann Cholm Cille in Donegal. In this town lives Finbar Murphy, a war veteran widower who claims to be a writer in his interactions with a few locals like the village policeman and his kind neighbor. However, it will soon be revealed that Finbar's post-World War II activities, now driven by a desire for redemption, were quite different.
