Emirates to add Mexico City to its network

Emirates is expanding its operation again – this time adding a daily service to Mexico City.

The new service will operate as a daily service, operating via Barcelona from the 9th December, and will be Emirates first service in the area.

Currently, the booked operation for this group of flights is:

The airline will utilise their upgraded Boeing 777-200LR aircraft – which is configured with 38 Business Class Seats in a 2-2-2 formation (superior to the general 2-3-2 operated by the Boeing 777-300ER fleet), and 264 economy seats (in the usual bone-crunching 3-4-3 layout).

As well as seating capacity, the belly space of the 777-200LR will offer 14 tonnes of cargo space.

Emirates will compete with AeroMexico on the Barcelona-Mexico City segment (with AeroMexico offering a seasonal service between the cities).

“We are excited to be able to introduce new air connectivity between Dubai and Mexico. The availability of high-quality, daily international air services is essential for the development of tourism, business and cultural ties. Trade, especially in high-value and time-sensitive products, will be facilitated by the ample cargo capacity on Emirates’ Boeing 777 aircraft. We also expect tourism to receive a major boost from the daily flights on our newly-refurbished Boeing 777-200LR.”

In reference to the stopover in Barcelona, he added.

“Due to the high altitude of Mexico City airport, it is not possible to operate a non-stop flight from Dubai, and Barcelona was a natural choice for a stopover. We are pleased to offer a direct connection on the route between the Spanish city and Mexico City that has long been neglected by other airlines and remains underserved despite the strong customer demand. We would like to thank the authorities and our partners in both Spain and Mexico for their support of the new route and look forward to provide our unique product and award-winning service to travellers.”

Hot and high is a challenge to airlines, and how they adjust the performance of their aircraft to ensure they can reach their destinations.

This normally means optimising the aircraft for weight, runway takeoff length and so on (there’s a great Wikipedia article that explainsHot and High better than I ever could).

As usual – the right aircraft for the right mission comes to mind – and with the penalties involves, the Boeing 777-200LR perhaps is best suited to this mission – even including the forced stopover at Barcelona.

With Emirates continuing to build out its long haul network, there will be more challenges ahead – but a bit of creativity as seen here could solve a lot of the issues.
