new balance launches latest sneakers with 3D printed sole
new balance has launched a new sneaker platform created with the massachusetts-based 3D-printing experts formlabs. named triplecell, the co-developed technology, makes the sole 10% lighter than other models but boasts the same cushioning. it will make its debut in two different releases: a 990 sport and the fuelcell echo.
‘triplecell will deliver the industry’s pinnacle expression of data to design with seamless transitions between variable properties underfoot’, says katherine petrecca, new balance general manager, innovation design studio.
‘3d printing is changing how companies approach manufacturing, with this announcement new balance is pioneering localized manufacturing,’ said dávid lakatos, chief product officer of formlabs.
‘by eliminating the dependence on molds and direct printing for both prototyping and production, their team shifts from months to hours in the development and production cycles.’
‘we’re moving towards a world where design cycles are closing in on the whim of the consumer and it’s exciting to be on the frontlines of this with new balance,’ he adds.
new balance will launch the 990 sport on june 28th. the fuelcell echo on september 15th both featuring triplecell technology, with the expected retail value of $185 USD and $175 USD respectively.
