Pensacola is the seat (1822) in Escambia County, which is located in northern Florida. It lies on Pensacola Bay (an arm of the Gulf of Mexico), around 35 miles (55 km) to the west of Fort Walton Beach and 60 miles (100 km) southeast of Mobile, Alabama. The bay was home to a Spanish settlement from 1559. It was abandoned two years afterward. The Spaniards formally took possession in 1698 and constructed Fort San Carlos de Austria which was later destroyed during the colonial fighting between France and Spain in 1719 and 1720. Following the British gained control in 1763, Pensacola (a name derived from Pansfalaya, an indigenous Native American tribe) became the capital of West Florida. It became a haven for loyalists during the American Revolution but in 1781 was taken by a Spanish force from Louisiana. In 1818, Gen. Andrew Jackson captured the city during the First Seminole War.
After Florida was transferred to the United States in 1821, Pensacola received a federal navy yard. It was also occupied by Confederates when they began the American Civil War, but Fort Pickens on Santa Rosa Island offshore was in Union hands; in 1862 the Confederates had to leave the city. Following the war, lumbering and commercial fishing increased and the industry was built. The city's economic growth was spurred by the construction of an aviation training school and the navy yard was transformed into an air station for the navy.
Tourism, as well as the military, are key aspects of the economy. health care, high-tech industries, and manufacturing (fibers chemical papers, chemicals, and construction materials) are also vital. Pensacola's deepwater port, which is landlocked, has direct access to the Intracoastal Waterway. It also has direct access to the Gulf via an east-west channel from Santa Rosa Island. However, its regional significance is somewhat overshadowed slightly by Mobile's large port. Pensacola Junior College (now Pensacola State College) was opened in 1948. Later, the University of West Florida opened in 1967.
