New born babies will not sleep through the night because they need to feed every few hours. In fact, if you are breast feeding your baby, expect to wake up every two hourly at least during the first few months and if you are using formula milk, it will be every 3 hours. Your baby will cry when he/she is hungry so your sleep will be disturbed as you will have to wake up to feed. I can fully understand how tiring that will be because my pair of twins was more accurate than my alarm clock!
Thus it is very important that you make some arrangement to your schedule so that your newborn can settle into a good sleeping routine quickly. It will help to make your night feedings less stressful and tiring.
In order to get your baby to sleep through the night, you need to tuck him/her into bed at the same time each night. Many first-time parents make the mistake of letting their newborn sleep at the same time as the parents. They do not realize that their babies will get up early for their feed and having insufficient sleep will make them cranky in the day. You should put your baby into bed earlier at night so that they get into a good sleep routine. You will also have a happier child that way.
Another important point you need to remember as you are getting your baby used to a schedule is that your newborn should be waking up in the nights just for feeds. That means you need to keep your newborns happy so that they only wake up to eat and then go back to sleep again. They should not be staying awake for long hours after each feed. Otherwise they will not be getting sufficient rest and they will be very cranky in the day. Moreover, as they grow older it will also be easier for them to sleep through the night when they no longer need to wake up to eat.
So how can you help your baby to sleep well in the night?
1. Check the room temperature to ensure that it is warm and comfortable for your baby. It should not be too hot or too cold.
2. Do not cover your baby with multiple layers of blankets or dressed in thick clothing. He/she will not feel comfortable and will tend to wake up easily.
3. Keep the room quiet and dark so that it is easier for you and your baby to fall asleep again after the night feeds.
