Avoid Some Winter Storm Flight Delays This Weekend By Changing Your Flight For Free

If your travels are taking you to or from New England, the Great Lakes, or Plains areas this weekend, or through them, then you may want to consider changing your ticket.

A huge winter storm, which the media has dubbed Isaiah, will be coming through the Great Lakes, New England, and Plains areas this weekend. The storm is expected to bring with it a ton of snow, ice, and freezing rain. You know, the stuff that an throw a wrench in your travel plans.

Most airlines are still operating in the areas, so if you do go to the airport there’s a chance you might be able to get on that flight. Depending on where you are, there’s also a pretty solid chance that your flight might get delayed or canceled.

If your travel plans are flexible, then most major U.S. carriers are currently offering travel waivers for the affected areas. With a waiver, you’ll be able to change your flight for free. That way, you can skip spending the day at the airport thanks to a delay and instead come when your flight is more likely to take off and be on time.

United is offering a travel waiver for any travel going to, from, or through these cities. If you rebook your new flight before January 14th, then it will also not charge you any fare difference between your current flight and your replacement one:

Delta is offering travel waivers for the following cities, provided your new travel happens before January 15th. You also have the option to cancel your ticket entirely and use the money as credit for a future flight.

Southwest is offering travel waivers for travel between Jan 11-12 in the following cities. Its waiver is good for rebooking your ticket anytime within 14 days of when your original flight was supposed to happen.

American is currently offering travel waivers for the largest expanse of time, January 11-13. To get a waiver you need to have purchased your ticket prior to January 8th, and need to reschedule your flight within 331 days of the date of your original ticket. You’ll still need to book the new flight by January 13th.
