The best Prime Day Seagate hard drive deals What's the difference between an external hard drive and an internal hard drive?

External hard drives are made to connect outside a computer, gaming console, and even tablets. Some are portable, and you can carry them around and plug them into any computer to immediately start importing or exporting files. Others are heavier and meant to sit on a desk semi-permanently next to a computer. Occasionally they'll need an external power source, but the USB cable is usually enough to deliver power to portable units. 

Internal hard drives are built directly into the computer. They can't be removed without opening up the PC's internals and aren't designed to work with multiple computers.

How much hard drive storage space do I need?

Most buyers won't ever need more than 2TB of storage space — even 1TB will probably be enough. A single terabyte can hold hundreds to thousands of files, depending on size.

The only reason you'd need more than that is if you know you're going to download a massive amount of large games, movies, or other files. They're also great for users performing archive work, which requires them to process years' worth of files.
