Golden Gate Bridge Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge that spans its Golden Gate, the one-mile-wide Strait that connects San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. It was first developed by engineer Joseph Strauss in 1917. In the Frommer's Travel Guide, refers to The Golden Gate Bridge as "possibly the most beautiful, definitely the most photographed, bridge on the planet." When it was first opening in 1937, it was the longest and highest suspension bridge anywhere in the world, with a length of 4200 feet, and the total height of 746 feet.
