The Giants kept their winning streak alive in hilarious, improbable fashion

Poor Farhan Zaidi. The Giants' general manager probably figured he could coast into July 31 with his team a comfortable distance from a playoff berth, allowing him to trade away every conceivable asset with a clear and unperturbed conscience. Alas.

The Giants, who entered June with a 22-34 record, have climbed all the way back to .500 after winning their seventh-consecutive game last night, besting the Mets 1-0 in a 10-inning affair. The team survived a vintage Jacob DeGrom performance (7 innings, 0 runs, 10 K's) and gutted out yet another improbable victory.

In fact, all things considered, this might have been the most improbable victory of the season.

The game absolutely looked like it was headed to an 11th inning as Pablo Sandoval dug in on an 0-2 count with two outs and Alex Dickerson on first. In an unfavorable count, Sandoval swung at an inside fastball and lofted a harmless pop-up to left.

Dominic Smith, the Mets' left fielder, didn't appear to have any issues tracking the fly ball off the bat, but as the 55 degree launch angle fly ball descended from the San Francisco skies, Smith appeared to forget how to use a glove.

The Mets' relay to the plate was tragically inaccurate, and Dickerson — who had been hustling — slid in safe to give the Giants the win.

"Well, we got a break. You take it," Giants manager Bruce Bochy told reporters after the game.

At 49-49, the Giants sit just two games back of the NL Wild Card. There are 11 days until the trade deadline.
