Amid growing outrage, Brazil’s far-right president cancels trip to New York - 3 minutes read

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, a far-right politician who consistently spouts hateful, homophobic, and racist rhetoric, was going to be honored by the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce at its gala this year in New York.

New York, however, was not particularly interested in playing host to Bolsonaro, who in addition to being a hatemonger is also the engineer of policies that will accelerate deforestation in the Amazon and do irreparable harm to the environment. On Friday, amid public outcry that did not seem likely to stem, Bolsonaro announced he would be canceling his trip.

Mayor Bill de Blasio was among the multitudes decrying the selection of Bolsonaro as the Chamber’s person of the year. Also horrified: The American Museum of Natural History, which agreed to host the event before it was announced that Bolsonaro would be the guest of honor.

Once the Natural History Museum backed out, Chamber officials said the gala would be held at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. But the Marriott, too, faced an outcry over its decision to host. Then, a stampede of corporate sponsors — including Delta Air Lines, the Financial Times, and Bain & Company — bailed on the event.

Even before Bolsonaro was elected, his history of vile speech was well-documented. As ThinkProgress previously reported:

Bolsonaro has called for a cleansing of leftist criminals from Brazil, publicly praised the country’s former military dictatorship, and promised to open up the Amazon for mining and logging — potentially with catastrophic results on the fight against climate change. He also called a congresswoman too ugly to rape, described refugees as the “scum of the world,” and said “a gay son is the result of a lack of beatings.”

A spokesperson for Bolsonaro issued a statement, saying the trip was canceled “in the face of deliberate attacks from the mayor of New York and pressure from interest groups.” Mayor de Blasio celebrated the news on Twitter, declaring, “Your hatred isn’t welcome here.”
