According to current maps according to the latest maps, the latest maps, Mattabesset River flows from Harts Ponds in Berlin. It flows 16.1 miles east of the Connecticut River. After passing Kensington it is the border between Middletown & Cromwell. Further south, the Coginchaug River flows out of a Durham upland meadow and then towards the north to join the Mattabesset, just upstream from the Connecticut River's junction. The Coginchaug River was the main route to the portage point which was located close to Palmer Field, just below Sowheag's main stronghold at Indian Hill. It was the former western boundary of the newly incorporated City of Middletown. For unknown reasons, the river was also known as the West River. It is likely that the term Mattabeseck was never thought of as to be euphonious. Many local residents tried to improve the name poetically.
