NCAA 95: San Beda lords over Mapua to lock down top-seed
San Beda University made quick work of young Mapua University, 83-55, Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre, to march forward to its 16th win in as many games in the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament.
The Red Lions let the young Cardinals keep close in the first half before breaking the game wide open in the third quarter where the dominated by a score of 21-9.
James Canlas did the most damage there, dropping seven of his 16 points, while "Bandana Bro" Evan Nelle had his own five markers in the same timeframe.
From there, the defending champions would never look back to yet another win that assures them of the top-seed for the Final Four.
Canlas also had 10 rebounds, three assists, and three steals while Nelle also had eight dimes, three boards, and two pilfers.
Calvin Oftana then chimed in 15 points, seven rebounds, and four assists in the red and white's 30th consecutive victory dating back to the end of the first round a season ago.
Because San Beda remains undefeated, however, there remains a possibility that there will be no Final Four - and instead, with a clean sweep of the eliminations, it automatically advances into the Finals while the other teams will duke it out in stepladder playoffs.
Mapua still has a shot at the next round even as their standing dropped to 7-8, but it will need to win out the rest of the way. Noah Lugo paced them in this one with a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double.
