Appleton is a city that is located in Outagamie, Calumet, and Winnebago counties in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The city is one of the Fox Cities that can be found on the Fox River, approximately 30 miles (48km) southwest of Green Bay. It is also located 100 miles (160km) north of Milwaukee. Appleton is the county seat of Outagamie County. It was the sixth-largest municipality in Wisconsin, according to the 2020 Census. Appleton is part of the Fox Cities Metropolitan Area, which is the third-largest state-wide area, following Madison and Milwaukee.
Appleton is the center of the Fox River Valley, which is the home of Lawrence University, the Fox Cities Exhibition Center, Fox Cities Performing Arts Center, Fox River Mall, Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium, Appleton International Airport, and the two major hospitals in the valley: St. Elizabeth Hospital and ThedaCare Regional Medical Centre-Appleton. It is also home to regional events like the Mile of Music and Octoberfest.
The Ho-Chunk and the Menominee historically occupied the land which is where Appleton is today. In 1836 the Treaty of the Cedars saw the Menominee Nation transfer the land to the United States. Chief Oshkosh represented the Menominee. After several years of negotiations between Menominee, Ho-Chunk, and the federal government over how to accommodate the Oneida and Stockbridge Munsee peoples who had been forced to move from New York to Wisconsin, the treaty was finally signed. The Ho-Chunk did not ratify the final treaty as only the Menominee gave up land. In the Menominee language, Appleton is known as Ahkonemeh or "watches for their spot".
The first European residents of Appleton were fur traders who sought to trade with Fox River Valley Native Americans. The White Heron was built by Hippolyte Grignon in the year 1835 to serve as an area to live with his family. It also functions as a trading post and inn.
Appleton was founded in 1847. It was established as three unincorporated villages on the Fox River. From south to north along the river, these were Grand Chute, Appleton, and Lewisburg. In 1853, all three villages were joined into one village of Appleton. John F. Johnston was the first resident and was elected village president. Amos A. Lawrence was also a financial donor to Lawrence University. It was at first known as the Lawrence Institute. Samuel Appleton, Lawrence's father-in-law from New England who never visited Wisconsin, donated $10,000 to the new college library. The town named it after him in recognition.
The paper business, which started with the construction of the first mill in the city in 1853, is at the forefront of the development of Appleton. The first national hydroelectric central station along the Fox River, the Vulcan Street Plant was built to provide electricity for the paper industry. It was inaugurated on September 30 the 30th of September, 1882. The power plant was powered by the Hearthstone House, which was the first residence powered by an Edison-based centrally-located hydroelectric station.
