Leadership and followership are like love and marriage. They go together like a horse and carriage.
On top of that managers are also have to take the leadership role sometimes, so you have to learn to switch hit when you're at the plate -- leader sometimes, follower at others, managing most often. Being resilient is key.
If you get stuck into a rigid role, you'll crack like a dried out leaf in fall.

Key Personal Strategic Plan To Building Your Power, Influence and Respect.
Every 90 days take stock of your personal and professional roles, key performance indicators, priorities and how much influence you have with your employees (leadership) and your boss (followership).
- What has worked well for me over the last 90 days?
- What changes have I made in my manager, leader, and follower styles that are making me more effective?
- What must I stop doing -- now, today -- to become more effective in the next 90 day?
- What have I tried out to become more effective?
We all want to be in the "good-enough boss" who is respected and appreciated by her/his employees.
Here are some simple, everyday things we can do to create that situation.
Why do this? To grow your power and influence so you and everyone else can find more meaning in their work life.
1. Take Care of Yourself
If you are over-worked, stressed or burning out it is likely you're not too pleasant to be around - at work or at home. Taking care of self is key to the rest of the tips.
2. Be Appreciative of People at Work.
Greet people by name. Make sure they know you are pleased to see them, as you pass them in the hallway. Doing this one step - everyday -- will encourage people to give you some slack when conflict arrives - and conflicts will happen.
3. Self-Manage to Keep Yourself From Being Seen as a Drama King or Queen.
When someone shares a situation with you, before responding, check out with her or him about whether your input or help is wanted.
Ask if they would like you to take action or if they just need your ear, not necessarily your mind. Listen actively and give them the encouragement they are looking for. If they want some help make sure you do it in a two-way conversation.
P.S. Self-managing works really well at home, too.
4. When Decisions Are Being Made That Affect Your Team, Get Buy-in.
With the caveat -- when possible. Sometimes you have to use your decision-making "silver bullet."
Your results will be improved when your team members buy-in to plans, projects or decisions that affect them.
Authentic collaboration is invaluable. Fact is, sometimes you can't spend the time and energy it would take to make a decision that needs to be made -- now.
These take-actions can help you build your power, influence and respect, which will make your efforts easier, more fun while increasing your team's performance.
