A 24-year-old cricket fan lost Rs 70,000 to conmen who cash in on the growing popularity of fantasy sports platforms like Dream11 that promises prizes worth crores of rupees if players selected by the fans perform well.

According to the police, the victim who runs a furniture shop in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar was preparing a team on Dream11 last Saturday, when a friend told him about a person on Telegram who could provide the winning team on the platform so that he could earn crores of rupees in return.

“When contacted, the individual on Telegram asked him to pay Rs 2000 for a month-long membership during which they will provide him with the winning team. On Monday, the victim made a payment of Rs 2000 for the ‘membership’ after which the stranger told him to speak to his superior who would call him soon,” an officer said.

Detailing the modus operandi of the fraudsters, the officer said that “the superior” contacted the victim a few hours later and asked him to pay an additional Rs 20,000 to book a particular winning slot.

A day later, the stranger called the man again to inform that a particular slot was booked for which he demanded another Rs 3,000, the police said, adding that the man provided the fraudsters his Dream11 user ID and password and also ended up paying them Rs 69,999 in a series of transactions.

The man realised he was being duped when the fraudsters called him up again on Wednesday to say that he had won Rs 1 crore as promised for which he would have to pay another Rs 35,000 as withdrawal charges to transfer the money.

The officials have registered a case against fraudsters at the Pant Nagar police station in Ghatkopar.
