How Robby Anderson can cash in with huge Jets season - 3 minutes read
Jets best players 2019 countdown
As the Jets get close to training camp, I am examining the roster and giving you my top 25 players. Each weekday, we will reveal another person on the list, leading right into camp. I am not including rookies on this list because I do not feel it is possible to fully evaluate them before they play a game.
How acquired: Signed as an undrafted free agent on May 6, 2016.
Looking back at 2018: It took Anderson a little while to click with rookie quarterback Sam Darnold, but they showed good chemistry by the end of the season.
Anderson had 50 catches for 752 yards and six touchdowns in 14 games last year. He averaged 15 yards per catch and showed he is one of the best deep threats in football.
An ankle injury cost Anderson two games in the middle of the year and slowed him down some.
Anderson’s productivity was down early in the season as he and Darnold got to know each other. He did not have more than three catches in a game until Week 9 in Miami.
Late in the year, though, Anderson and Darnold were on the same page. Anderson had seven catches for 96 yards and touchdown against the Texans in Week 15 and nine catches for 140 yards and a touchdown against the Packers in Week 16.
Pro Football Focus rated Anderson 55 out of 117 receivers the site graded.
Outlook for 2019: This is a huge season for Anderson, who can cash in as a free agent after this season.
An undrafted free agent out of Temple, Anderson has become a solid NFL receiver with blazing speed that gives defenses headaches.
Anderson should benefit with the additions of Le’Veon Bell and Jamsion Crowder to the offense, as well as the development of Chris Herndon — whom the NFL suspended for the first four games of the season. It will be difficult for defenses to focus on stopping him.
New Jets coach Adam Gase wants to get Anderson more involved with the offense and make him more than a deep threat. There has been talk every offseason of Anderson becoming a more complete receiver. We will see if Gase can accomplish that goal.
Anderson already has made one big achievement this year. He stayed out of trouble this offseason after getting arrested in each of the last two offseasons. Anderson knows if he wants a team to commit to him with a long-term deal, whether that is the Jets or another team, he has to prove he can be trusted. He took a step in that direction this offseason by staying out of the police blotter. Now, he has to follow that up with a big season.
