Preliminary Rounds to Play Round Robin Format
Slight Schedule Adjustments Allow Preliminary Rounds for All Events at Nationals to Now Play Round Robins –
Facials Coverings Will Be Voluntary Only at Upcoming Las Vegas Tournament
(Colorado Springs, CO – June 8, 2021) – USA Table Tennis (“USATT”), the National Governing Body for the sport of table tennis, today announced that the preliminary rounds for all events at the upcoming 2021 US National Table Tennis Championships at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada (July 4 – 9, 2021) will be played in round robin formats. USATT also announced today that face masks will not be mandatory at the US Nationals, although it is still recommended that persons who are not fully vaccinated for COVID-19 wear appropriate facial coverings.
“Although we originally planned to make all events at the US Nationals single elimination with consolation rounds, we have been able to slightly adjust our playing schedule which will now allow us to play round robins in the preliminary stages for all events, which should mean more table tennis action for all participants at Nationals,” said USATT Chief Executive Officer Virginia Sung. “Also, since Las Vegas and Clark County have now lifted all COVID-19 restrictions in their community, we believe it is appropriate to follow suit and relax the COVID-19 restrictions at Nationals. This includes a decision to make facial coverings for participants and patrons voluntary, although we do recommend that persons who are not fully vaccinated for COVID-19 continue to wear appropriate facial coverings.”
