Types of Humidifiers

The types of humidifiers generally in use are:

1. Evaporative humidifier

2. Warm mist humidifiers

3. Vaporizer humidifier

4. Ultrasonic humidifier

Out of these types, mostly the Evaporative humidifiers use filters.

Honeywell Humidifier Filter Cleaning

The filter is used in a humidifier to filter the water in the tank to not let the dust mix with the air around. Gradually dust and debris are deposited in the filter. Removal of this dust is important for the efficient function of the humidifier and the hygienic environment.

There are three ways of cleaning the humidifier filter. They are:

Rinsing a Reusable Filter

Before we start the humidifier filter cleaning process we need to plug the humidifier out of the power source. Then choose a stable platform like the countertop beside your sink. Then remove the water in the tank into the sink by opening the top of the humidifier. Use a dry towel to place the water tank upon if it is still draining water.

Now the filter is to be removed. Usually, it is located in the humidifier motor housing. So remove the outer casing of the housing and pull the dirty humidifier filter out. If the filter is mildly dirty it can be rinsed. If it is a disposable filter then it has to be replaced every three months.

After removing the filter place it in a stream of water to get rid of dust and debris. Use a soft-bristled brush to remove the dust particles. Always use fresh water to rinse the filter. After some time shake it to remove excess water. Then place it on a dry towel for 2 hours to let it dry.

Force drying or cleaning of the filter by using any tools may damage the filter. Let it dry naturally. Post drying you can again put back the filter into the humidifier and the system is good to use.

Cleaning a Filter with Vinegar

Vinegar is used for the in-depth cleaning of the filter. It can remove mold out of the filter mesh very easily. So, to start the process first fill a bucket with warm water and then add one part of vinegar for every two parts of water. Now plug off your humidifier and drain it. Then take the filter out.

Now submerge the filter into the water-vinegar solution and leave it for at least 30 to 45 minutes. You can also leave it for an hour or more. A while after keeping it in the solution you can notice the mold spots dissolving.

Vinegar is naturally acidic so better use it instead of artificial chemical cleaners which may damage the filter material. after leaving the filter for sufficient time in the solution you can take out the filter and start cleaning it with water. While cleaning it with water make sure all the vinegar is gone out of the filter. Then you can shake off the excess water and dry it out.

Sanitizing a Filter using Bleach

Bleach can clean extensive mold that formed on the filter mesh. This process is the same as with vinegar but there are a few important things to be noted.

The proportion of bleach should be very little in water. The water should not be hot as it releases bleach fumes. You should leave the filter submerged for just 10 minutes. Do not directly come in touch with the bleach solution as it can harm the skin. Use gloves instead. After some time remove the filter and rinse it with clean water and dry it.
