HENDERSON, Nev. -- The Las Vegas Raiders are cutting defensive tackle P.J. Hall two years after selecting him in the second round of the 2018 NFL draft, a source confirmed to ESPN.

Hall, 25, had appeared in 30 games (18 starts) over the past two seasons but had just 1.5 sacks in that time. He took to Twitter late Sunday night, writing, "One thing I know is God got me."

Raiders coach Jon Gruden mentioned Hall on Thursday as a player who needed to step up in training camp when asked about second- and third-year defensive linemen.

"They have to prove they belong in this league," Gruden said. "They have to prove that they can be front-line guys. P.J. Hall, [Maurice] Hurst, [Arden] Key, those are three guys that we used high draft picks on.

"Arden's got to stay healthy. P.J. Hall, I'm anxious to see where his weight is; he came in overweight last year -- not at that position, can't happen. Mo Hurst has had some good moments, but we need these guys to burst on the scene, no question."

The Raiders added veteran defensive coach Rod Marinelli this offseason.

"Getting Rod Marinelli is the best thing I can do to allow that to happen," Gruden said. "I really believe he's as good of a coach as I've ever seen when it comes to developing defensive line. I saw him do it with Simeon Rice, I saw him do it with a number of players along his career, and I'm counting on that happening."

Just not with Hall.

With Johnathan Hankins established as a starter at one defensive tackle in the Raiders' 4-3 base defense, Hurst is the other returner at the position. Las Vegas signed a pair of former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackles this offseason in Maliek Collins and Daniel Ross. Gruden seemed particularly high on Collins.

"I really think the key to our defense is eliminating penalties, creating more turnovers, and I think Maliek Collins is a name that we got to circle and look at every single day," Gruden said. "I think that three-technique in this defense has to raise hell, and he's got to do it for us."

Hall was a two-time FCS All-American at Sam Houston State before being chosen No. 57 overall by the Raiders in 2018.

It was not a good week for Hall, who earlier tweeted about his inglorious arrival to Southern Nevada.
