Meet Kailand Morris, Dior Intern (and Stevie Wonder’s Son)

Fashion runways, lately, are filled with the children of celebrities—younger, rosier versions of faces we’ve seen for decades. Kaia Gerber (daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford), Christian Combs (son of Diddy), and of course, the Jenner-Kardashian industrial complex have made modeling a well-traveled avenue into fashion industry fame.

While Kailand Morris, the son of Stevie Wonder and fashion designer Kai Morris, has done a bit that, he more recently made news when Page Six reported that Morris was interning with Kim Jones at Dior Men’s during the most recent iteration of Paris Fashion Week in June.

“I went to Kim’s first show, the one with Kaws,” he said, over pasta and pizza at the Paris restaurant Cesar earlier this month. “And I loved it.” His family hosted a brunch for Jones and the brand at their home in Los Angeles, where he got to know (and adore) the designer. At the end of last spring, Morris’s parents asked if he could intern for the house, and Dior agreed. And now, the 17-year-old high school student is going to have the most epic “what I did last summer” essay ever.

Fashion has become a major passion for teenage boys, who line up for Supreme and hunt for old Raf Simons pieces on Grailed with the fervor past generations may have applied to video games and music. But Morris has pretty advanced taste for a teenager: he arrived wearing a vintage rib-knit sweater by Jean-Paul Gaultier, the Parisian provocateur who’s become a streetwear cult figure since Supreme released a Gaultier capsule this past spring. Morris’s jeans were by Jacquemus, a brand he loves—“Did you see that last show? In the lavender field? That was tight.” His sneakers, the Converse from Virgil Abloh’s first collection with Nike, were well-loved. “I like dirty sneakers,” he said. “Golden Goose—you know Golden Goose? That’s the next wave.”

Morris also loves Kapital, the cult Japanese menswear brand known for its trippy Americana. But he especially loves vintage, he said, and in fact his Gaultier sweater was a vintage piece he found during a recent trip to New York. I asked him how his mother’s work as a fashion designer influenced his interest, and he said that thanks to her, he grew up with it. “I was wearing like, crazy-colored Prada sneakers when I was 7 years old.” Then he laughed, and admitted, “Actually, my mom is the one who found this sweater. She was like, ‘This is a really special piece.’”
