Beauty Queen Loses Her Crown Over Tweets
(Newser)– For one beauty queen, her tweets meant her crown. Kathy Zhu, 20, has been told she's no longer Miss Michigan 2019 because her "social media accounts contain offensive, insensitive and inappropriate content." Zhu blames her remarks about hijabs and black violence for the uncrowning: "I have seen this happen before," she tells the Detroit Free Press. "It is just not okay to be prejudiced against people who just have a different political view as you." On Thursday, she tweeted an email from Laurie DeJack, Miss World America Michigan's state director, saying Zhu had broken a rule requiring contestants to be "of good character and whose background is not likely to bring into disrepute Miss World America."
Back in 2018, Zhu tweeted about what she called a "try a hijab on" booth at the University of Central Florida, per the Orlando Sentinel. Zhu sparked a Twitter war by posting, "So you're telling me that it’s now just a fashion accessory and not a religious thing? Or are you just trying to get women used to being oppressed under Islam?" Zhu later posted a reply, "Did you know the majority of black deaths are caused by other blacks? Fix problems within your own community before blaming others." Both tweets are now deleted, the Hill notes. Miss World America isn't talking to the media, but Zhu tells Yahoo Lifestyle that pageant officials are discriminating against "people with conservative views." (Read more beauty queen stories.)
