Two of the Best Animated Films of the Year Are Now in Theaters - 3 minutes read
Inside Out 2 might be the highest-grossing animated film ever but two films we think are even better are now in theaters, both starring robots: Transformers One and The Wild Robot.
Last week, we got Transformers One and it’s awesome. The film tells the never-before-seen story of how the two most famous characters in the Transformers franchise, Optimus Prime and Megatron, went from best friends to mortal enemies. That means you not only get this fascinating, inevitable story at the core, you get a full spectrum of emotion around it. Super fun, friendly action scenes at the start, followed by sad, dramatic tension at the end.
When the first trailer for the film was revealed, we were skeptical. It looked like a pure kid’s movie, which would have been fine, but maybe not for everyone. However, the end product is not that. It’s a film kids and adults can enjoy together, whether they’ve never seen a Transformers movie before or they’re still broken over events in the 1986 movie. Transformers One is an excellent movie and you should see it if you can. Here’s our full review as well as a non-spoiler, and spoiler, interview with the film’s director, Josh Cooley.
Having one incredible animated movie in theaters at a time is one thing. But what about two? That’s what we get this weekend with the release of The Wild Robot, the story of a robot mistakenly stranded on an island that must adapt to its surroundings. Again, early marketing for this one did it no favors but once people started to see it and gave it glowing reviews, anticipation built. And now, having seen it ourselves, we can confirm it’s not just a magical movie, it’s maybe the best movie of the year. Yes, even better than Transformers One. That’s how good it is.
In The Wild Robot, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o voices Roz, a high-tech helper robot who quickly realizes she’s somewhere she’s not supposed to be. As Roz attempts to survive and adapt to this new habitat, she becomes responsible for a little goose she later names Brightbill—and the two, along with a sly fox voiced by Pedro Pascal, become a sort of family. The movie truly has everything: heart, humor, incredible action, stunning animation, and bombastic music. It’s a very special movie people will be talking about for a long, long time. To have one incredible animated movie in theaters at a time is pretty special. But for it to be two? And they’re both about robots? That’s just super fun and awesome. We highly recommend both Transformers One and The Wild Robot.
