Considering concerns over social distancing and airborne transmission of the coronavirus, cross-country train travel seems like an even worse idea than getting on a plane right now, but sometimes you just have to move about the country. Americans’ general reluctance to travel is certainly impacting rail giant Amtrak, which has cut service and laid off 20 percent of its workforce amid the pandemic. Still, Amtrak is hoping it can lure you into buying a ticket with a sweet BOGO (buy one, get one free) deal on its sleeper service—an attractive offer I have trouble recommending to anyone who doesn’t absolutely need to travel right now, given the current state of our nation.

That said, if you simply must travel, here’s how you can pay way less than you normally would for the honor of riding the rails in your own private sleeper car.

From now until July 17, you can purchase one ticket for the “roomette” accommodations and get a second ticket for the same trip free. Roomettes are simply the “sleeper cars” in which the seats recline into a bed. Rooms also include a large window, towels and linens and a private bathroom and shower.
Though obviously great for couples, if you’re traveling alone, the purchase of the “free” second ticket ensures no one will be sharing the room with you. These tickets will be for travel beginning July 13th through September 20, 2020.
As Amtrak spokesperson Olivia Irwin said in a press release, “All customers in private rooms receive complimentary lounge access at major stations, priority boarding and complimentary meals onboard.”
Passengers will be required to wear face coverings on trains and in stations, except when in their private rooms.

Roomettes are offered on these train lines only:
California Zephyr
Capitol Limited
Cardinal
City of New Orleans
Coast Starlight, Crescent
Empire Builder
Lake Shore Limited
Silver Service
Southwest Chief
Sunset Limited
Texas Eagle.
