The spread of the coronavirus isn’t just affecting public health and the global economy; it also impacts internet and cellular networks. With so many people stuck at home and others displaced by travel bans, data usage has risen, bandwidth is clogged, and service is being disrupted all around the world.

All the “Big Four” mobile carriers are trying to help customers financially by waiving late fees for bills and promising to not terminate service as a result of one’s inability to pay (thanks to all things coronavirus). If you’re a T-Mobile subscriber, however, you’re getting some extra benefits.

First, T-Mobile is expanding its 600 MHz spectrum to account for the increase in network usage. This includes customers in rural communities as well. Additionally, T-Mobile customers will get the following free upgrades to their service for at least the next 60 days:

All T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile data plans are being upgraded to unlimited smartphone data (does not include roaming data).

T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile will get an extra 20GB of mobile hotspot or tethering data.

T-Mobile is also expanding some of its special programs during this time. This includes:

Schools and students using T-Mobile’s EmpowerED programs will be given at least 20GB of data per month for the next 60 days.

Lifeline customers on T-Mobile will get an extra 5GB of free data per month over the next two months.

Lastly, T-Mobile is also helping Sprint customers displaced by the pandemic by granting Sprint users free roaming access for the next 60 days. This is an important move since regional quarantines and travel bans have stranded thousands of travelers in non-local areas.
