18 Days, 4 Countries And Not A Clue Where You’re Going – Mystery Trips Are Now Officially A Thing

Intrepid Travel has officially announced their second Uncharted Expedition, a “one off adventure,” which will begin in Tehran, Iran and end in Istanbul, Turkey.

“You won’t know where you’re going, what you’ll see, where you’ll stay, or what you’ll be eating,” teases Intrepid Travel co-founder Darrell Wade.

Not for the faint of heart, he adds: “there’ll be long travel days, intermittent electricity and Wi-Fi, a few cold showers, plus a few treats along the way … including fermented mare milk. But it’s going to be a real adventure. One day you could be hiking through the world’s most remote and breathtaking landscapes; the next, soothing your aching muscles in a sauna in the middle of nowhere.”

Applications are currently being accepted for the 18-day, 2,200 mile journey, where 12 travelers are asked to “surrender their misconceptions of the Middle East and put their trust back in people and humanity – embracing their inner explorer and trusting their own adventurous traits,” says Wade.

This is the second mystery expedition launched by Intrepid. Last year they announced the first of these one-off, specially curated experiences, having asked travelers to join them on what Wade says is “a journey that is undefined, unmapped, and uncharted.”

The 10 travelers selected on the first Uncharted Expedition took off yesterday, June 30. Launching from the capital city of Kazakhstan, Nur-Sultan, the group – who know nothing of the itinerary – will take their own 2,200-mile grand tour of Central Asia, eventually ending in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Travelers on the first expedition will be immersed in experiences that range from trying new foods – think hearty soups of boiled cow’s hooves – to promises of travel by plane, train and automobile. They might expect to stay in anything from small hotels to a homestay inside a cave, or even a night or two in a former Soviet sewing factory.

The second of the Uncharted Expeditions is scheduled for April 2020 and with a price tag of $3,740 USD per person, excluding flights, it’s a deal (the Central Asia tour was priced at $5,650 USD per person). Interested travelers can apply through July 9, 2019. Intrepid will randomly select and notify those selected by email the second week of July. “Applicants will need to be Intrepid,” Wade adds.
