SurvivalBlog Readers’ & Editors’ Snippets - 4 minutes read

We no longer have comments to articles, but this column is intended to maintain the continuity of some two-way communication. This weekly column is a collection of short snippets: practical self-sufficiency items, how-tos, lessons learned, tips and tricks, and news items — both from readers and from SurvivalBlog’s editors. We may select some long e-mails for posting as separate letters.

Firstly, and perhaps most importantly, Tim. J. was the first of several readers to recommended this excellent vlog from Good Patriot: “How To Fight Back – Part 1: Using Your “SHIELD”.

Sir,

I read the review about the slip-on Pachmayr Decelerator pad with interest.  I have a much older permanently installed Decelerator rifle butt pad installed in late 1980s.  It still works nearly as well as it did when new.  At least, that is what my now 58-year-old right shoulder tells me :^)  Because adding the extra length would have affected my off-hand rifle shooting, I removed about ½” of factory wood stock, then regained approximately ¼” from the pad thickness.  It does affect future worth to collector, but it gains faster time mounting to shoulder.  Worth it to me. I recently purchased a slip-on Kick-Eeze pad for a lightweight single shot 12 gauge shotgun but as of yet have not tried it yet. – J.R.G.

Tunnel Rabbit wrote to recommend the latest by former British Army ex-pat “Max Velocity”:  Moving By Vehicle in High Threat Environments. Tunnel Rabbit’s comments:

“This is family oriented.  Even if it does not fit well in with usual topics found on the blog, it is a must-read.  It is excellent as it adapts military tactics to the average prepper family that is forced to move away even from the city, or a well-stocked, and otherwise ideal retreat location.  It is certainly a part of my planning, and I do not have a family to protect.”

Tunnel Rabbit also sent this: Explaining Tactical Communications With Mike Glover Fieldcraft Survival. Tunnel Rabbit’s comments:

“Key aspects of military communications discussed, might be simplified and in part, incorporated into a prepper’s commo plan.”

Reader “Ogden” suggested this article over at the sometimes sensationalistic Natural News: Toxic U.S. soybean oil absolutely wrecking the human brain; new research links it to autism and Alzheimer’s.

Another from D.S.V.: Pfizer CEO’s Israel visit cancelled because he is not fully vaccinated.

“We had a 12-hour power outage, at night, with temperatures in the teens.  I was up most of the night tending the fire.  I also have an issue with breathing at night and require a CPAP machine, so needless to say, I snoozed on and off, sitting up in a chair, and was exhausted the next day.  I do have a portable generator in the garage, but I had not gotten around to figuring out how to use it, didn’t have a long extension cord, etc.  I heard the neighbors fire up a large generator and I thought, “goody goody for them”!  LOL.  The next day the power was on and off all day, then finally the problem was resolved and haven’t had a problem since.  We normally don’t have outages where I live, but I was prepared to keep warm and fed.

Another hole discovered in my preps this past week:  My feet developed a painful fungus, that I’ve never had before.  Something to think about for winter months when your feet are kept nice and warm in socks and shoes most of the time.  None of my remedies worked.  Normally I soak my feet in a tub of hot water with apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil (an anti-fungal), and a bit of Dawn for dishes as the soap part.  This has always worked well to keep my feet healthy.  It didn’t rid me of the fungus.  I finally got online and ordered some fungal foot powder.  It took a few days to get here, but it cleared up the problem within a couple of days.  Note to self: have some anti-fungal powder stashed away.
