The Netflix streaming service will soon stop working on second- and third-generation Apple TV models. It’s not a shocking development as both are over a decade old.
If you’ve been looking for a reason to buy a newer tvOS device, it may have just arrived. (By coincidence, Verizon currently offers the Apple TV 4K for just $89.99.)

Netflix fans might need a new Apple TV
Starting way back in 2006, long before Apple TV+ came along, there were already Apple TV streaming devices. And then 2015 brought a huge change: the launch of tvOS with a version of the App Store.
On Tuesday, Netflix warned customers using Apple settop boxes released before 2015 that support is ending.
The message says:
“You’re receiving this email because you’ve used Apple TV (2nd generation) and/or Apple TV (3rd generation) with Netflix in the past. Unfortunately, we’re sunsetting support for these devices on Jul 31, 2024. We know this can be frustrating, but we’re doing this to ensure you maintain the best possible Netflix viewing experience.”
The second-generation model launched in 2010, and the third-generation reached customers in 2012, so these are nearly antiques. The surprise isn’t that Netflix is ending support for a 14-year-old device but that it continued to support such an old device until now.
Netflix continues to support Apple TV HD from 2015 as well as the three generations of 4K models that have debuted since then.
The latest Apple TV 4K — which is sure to work with Netflix for many years to come — starts at $129.
