The streaming music service Spotify just increased its prices for new U.S. subscribers. The costs of most subscription options are now above those of its arch rival, Apple Music.
The new prices go into effect for current subscribers in July.
Spotify subscription prices are going up
Spotify and Apple Music are locked in a fight to be the world’s most popular music streaming service, with Amazon Music trying to keep up. Their ad-free services are similar enough that the preference between the two often comes down to iPhone vs. Android or U.S. vs. Europe (Spotify is based in Sweden).
Price has also been part of the competition, so Apple Music now has the advantage. Spotify warned its customers on Monday, “So that we can continue to invest in and innovate on our product features and bring users the best experience, we occasionally update our prices.”
An Individual Spotify plan is now $11.99 per month, up a $1. The Duo plan jumped to $16.99 per month, up $2. The Family plan is $19.99 per month, up $3. Only the Student plan stayed at its same $5.99 per month cost.
The last price hike was in July 2023. Subscribers in the U.S. can expect an email in the near future alerting them to the 2024 increase.
Spotify vs. Apple Music
For comparison, an individual Apple Music plan is $10.99 per month. A Family plan is $16.99 per month and the Student plan is $5.99 per month.
Of course, Spotify has a ad-supported option that’s otherwise free, while Apple Music does not.
In the fight to be the biggest, the Sweden-based service is winning. It claims 239 million subscribers worldwide. Its U.S. rival has an estimated 112 million users worldwide.
