Cyber Monday laptop FAQs Is Cyber Monday a good time to buy a laptop?

Yes, laptops get big discounts on Cyber Monday. This is due to general holiday deals and also because retailers want to clear out stock before 2024 models get released next year. Even high-end gaming laptops fall to midrange or budget levels, which makes Cyber Monday pretty much the best time to buy a new laptop.

And don't shy away from truly new models. You might be tempted to snag an older 2022 or 2021 model, thinking it's cheaper, but we're seeing such good prices on the latest models from top brands that we think they offer the best value.

What's different between a Windows laptop and a Chromebook?

Chromebooks are a specific type of laptop that uses the ChromeOS instead of Windows. The Chrome operating system is almost entirely based on your Google/Gmail account, and apps run through your internet browser. Programs you usually associate with Windows, like Microsoft Word, are replaced with Google apps like Google Docs.

Compared to Windows laptops, Chromebooks can be limiting. If you don't have an internet connection, they're almost useless. And they're not great for gaming outside of cloud services.

But as long as you keep their limitations in mind, Chromebooks are fast for general use and have long battery life. If you only use your laptop for browsing the internet, social media, and other simple tasks, a Chromebook can be an ideal budget option.

How much RAM should I get?

We recommend at least 16GB of RAM for most needs, though 32GB is best for gaming. Websites and apps are big enough now that anything less could slow down your performance. This is especially true if you're the kind of person who keeps dozens of internet tabs open at once.

8GB can still work if you're really on a budget, but that just isn't enough these days to adequately support modern programs. The exception is for Chromebooks, which nearly all come with only 4 to 8GB of RAM. That's fine since Chromebooks are far simpler than PCs and don't need as much memory for their cloud-based programs.
