Geto Boys Announce First Show After Bushwick Bill’s Death
Geto Boys have announced their first live performance sinceBushwick Bill died earlier this month. The group is on the lineup for the 2019 Adult Swim Festival in Los Angeles. According to festival representatives, the show will be a tribute to Bill.
After Bushwick Bill revealed that he was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, a Geto Boys farewell tour was announced and quickly scrapped. Bill was reportedly upset with the title of the tour (“The Beginning of a Long Goodbye: The Final Farewell”) because it “made it seem like he was on his deathbed.”
Hours before his family officially confirmed the news, Bill’s death was prematurely reported. Many outlets, including Pitchfork, reported the news based in part on Scarface’s tribute to Bill on Instagram. Bill’s son corrected the record, and in the process, seemed to criticize Bill’s Geto Boys bandmates. “Certain people have been so quick to write him off as dead so they can capitalize off it, and it’s messed up because yall really think these people care about him,” Bill’s son wrote on Instagram. “There is no Geto Boys without Bushwick Bill.”
The same week Bill died, Scarface (aka Brad Jordan) announced a run for Houston City Council. In an interview with The FADER’s Jordan Darville, Scarface was asked about his future with music. “I mean, for me it’s done,” he replied. “I like the idea of politics.”
Pitchfork has reached out to representatives for the Geto Boys and the family of Bushwick Bill for comment.
