New 'Dora And The Lost City Of Gold' Trailer Features Swiper And Boots

This trailer has been playing in theaters since the opening day of Toy Story 4, so I'm not sure why Paramount has chosen today to drop it online for our viewing pleasure. Unless they think it's a good match with Crawl(which my wife really wants to see), we can expect this to be one of a flurry of kid-centric trailers to play before The Lion Kingnext week. Anyway, this trailer isn't all that different from the teaser, even if it's a little less concerned about essentially punishing Dora for wanting to explore and go on adventures.

And, yes, it's a little odd that they still seem so gun shy about showing off the film's fantastical creatures. Look, if you're turned off by the idea of a talking fox who wears an eye mask and is obsessed with stealing stuff, then you're probably not the right demographic for this Dora the Explorermovie. Yes, we do get one brief look at Swiper the Fox (1:03), but he doesn't get any dialogue despite allegedly being voiced by Benicio Del Toro. Adorable little Boots doesn't get any real dialogue either, despite allegedly being voiced by Danny Trejo.

I'd like to think that Paramount is saving some stuff for the theatrical viewing experience. But the feeling one gets from the marketing is that they are somewhat embarrassed by the source material or feel the need to justify how it's not just a movie for really young kids. Are there really a bunch of teenagers who are debating whether to see a Dora the Explorermovie based on how "cool" it looks? If you're going to make a live-action Doramovie, indulge in all the weird stuff that made it into one of the best preschool toons of all time.

Granted, this isn't intended to be a grand piece of art, but this does feel akin to the Matthew Broderick Inspector Gadgetmovie from 1999. The good news is that this has a stacked cast, including Isabela Moner (pro-tip: Instant Familywas one of the best major studio releases of last year), Jeffrey Wahlberg (as Diego), Eugenio Derbez (a big draw on his own, natch), Eva Longoria and Michael Peña. But when you've got Benicio Del Toro as a talking fox who blurs the line between hero and villain while nursing an obvious crush on the title character, you flaunt that!

Anyway, Dora and the Lost City of Goldopens on August 9, 2019. As always, let's hope for the best.
