If you buy a vst plugin in 2030? Thoughts for our future!
2030? VST4 or VST5. 2040? VST5 or VST6. More seriously, I would expect improvements o DSP techniques, both on "pure digital" and "emulation" plugins (especially for the former). I would also take into account the "20 years cycle" for a possible revival of old plugins/dsp (but I think most of them are still avaible now, so it shouldn't be a big issue in 10 years... unless there's a renewed interest for some old 32 bit only plugins which, by the way, are already an issue on current setups). Probably it's more for synths than effects, though. But, unless something revolutionary happens in the IT/DSP field, I think we'll see a steady progress, building on what we already have... I'm more concerned about the future of computers as we know them now (maybe tablets will get more use? will the machines "affordable by common people" be powerful enough, given the diffusion of online services?) and the diffusion of subscription plans for software.
