Algeria football fans block streets across London setting off fireworks and smashing up a police car after beating Nigeria

ALGERIA football fans were seen setting off fireworks and smashing up a police car in London as they celebrated beating Nigeria tonight.

Havoc broke out across the capital which saw some fans violently celebrate the 2-1 win in the last four of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Supporters blasted fireworks into the sky on Seven Sisters Road, with shocked residents filming some shooting sideways down the road.

Videos uploaded to social media show people running and ducking for cover as fireworks explode in the middle of crowds.

Sharing a clip, one Twitter user wrote: "OK, this is getting a bit scary now."

But the chaos wasn't limited to one area, with chanting fans blocking roads in Finsbury Park, Piccadilly Circus, Walthamstow and Southwark.

Buses and cars were unable to move as flag-waving supporters set off flares.

Others climbed on top of cars, double-decker buses, and even the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain in Piccadilly Circus.

A mob even smashed up a police car in North London during the mayhem.

Metropolitan Police said in a statement: "Some members of the group began setting off fireworks before the crowd grew as the football match concluded.

"A police vehicle has sustained damage to its windshield."

Despite the chaos, no arrests have been made and there were no reports of injuries.

Police remain at the scene, according to a Met Police spokesperson.

The match that sparked the celebrations saw Riyad Mahrez score a free-kick five minutes into injury time to send Algeria to the Africa Cup of Nations Final.

The Manchester City star smashed a drive into the top corner to see his nation through to next Friday's final against Senegal.

Algeria led through an own-goal by William Troost-Ekong but were pegged back after Nigeria received a penalty for handball after a long VAR referral by the referee, who initially didn't award the spot-kick.

Nigeria levelled at 1-1 from the spot through Odion Ighalo.

But Algeria captain Mahrez won the game at at the very death to send his team to their first final in nearly 30-years.
