2nd Test Live: India enforce follow-on on Day 4 - 20 minutes read

India vs South Africa Highlights, 2nd Test: India beat South Africa to take unassailable 2-0 series lead

: "It's about getting the responsibility back of being a captain (on scoring the double-hundred). The mindset is always to help the team and in that process, the big scores come. I think the moment you start thinking about the team, all the pressure goes away. I am at a stage at my career where I am happy to play for my team. Putting the team in a commanding position is the only goal. It's been a natural progress to have a calm mindset over the years. I have a good understanding at that and hence the muted celebration. You have to look forward to playing against the new ball. I enjoy batting with Jinks (Rahane), we run well between the wickets. We are the most successful Indian pair. Having him at the other end, keeps you focussed. The good thing is when we started, we were at number 7. The only way was up. We are all lucky to have this group of players. It's amazing to see that hunger for all the guys to keep improving. Saha was back to his best. Ashwin has stepped up beautifully and it's guys willing to work hard. It's been nice and looking at the larger picture - the Test Championship, every game has a value. No-one's going to relax from here." : "We know in sub-continents, first innings is really important. You have to be on top of your game, if you aren't then you are found wanting. All the questions we threw at him (Virat Kohli), he had answers. It was a right selection for his pitch; I thought it was the right-decision making. KG managed to build some pressure but we needed another bowler, who could do that job. It was a young fast bowler making his (about Nortje) debut, it's about learing and improving. Ngidi is fine and is working hard on his fitness. It's about getting his tank up and hopefully, we'll see if he plays the next Test. We will try to put up a better performance in the next Test." : "I think I should treat him for those wickets down leg-side and that first catch, and I think they are Saha's wickets. I thought they were going for boundaries, that's always the thought when it's down leg-side, but I was thanking God and Saha that I got those wickets. There is a healthy competition in the side, and I knew that if I get a chance, I had to grab it. I had taken 10 wickets in the last home match in Hyderabad (2018 vs West Indies), and I was confident about bowling in India. I had a good mindset and I was happy that I executed my skills on the ground." : "Actually prep-wise, Umesh, Ishant and Shami bowl at me, and we practice that way, they give me some really good practice with the moving ball. Our trainers help us out with stretches, ice-baths, and we are trained for the match-day really well, so credit to them for my fitness as well as my wicketkeeping performance." India won the second Test against South Africa by an innings and 137 runs to seal the three-match series with a game to spare, in Pune on Sunday. India had won the series-opener in Bengaluru by 203 runs. Following on, South Africa were all out for 189 in their second innings in the final session of day four. Pacers got two early wickets and then Ashwin double-strike just before lunch rattled South Africa as the visitors were once again in all sorts of trouble in the second innings on Day 4 of the Pune Test. After India enforced follow-on, the Proteas were 74/4 at the break with Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock new at the crease against a dominant India bowling attack. The Proteas, who were made to follow-on for the first time since 2008, once again got off to a torrid start with Ishant Sharma getting Aiden Markram on the second ball of the day. Umesh Yadav then got rid of Theunis de Bruyn courtesy an excellent catch from Wriddhiman Saha down the leg side. Ishant gets a wicket second-ball of the day. Players from both the teams are on the field. Aiden Markram will face the first ball from Ishant Sharma. So, Team India has decided to enforce the follow-on. South Africa will bat again and they still trail by 326 runs. : The deadline to follow-on decision is As far as follow-on decision is concerned, Virat has been in this situation on six occasions in India and he has opted to enforce the follow-on only once. So, the big question at the moment is whether India will enforce the follow-on or not. They currently have a 326-run lead which is quite a big one. But if Virat Kohli asks South Africa to bat again and the Proteas play out of their skin in their second innings, then India might have to bat last. And that will be a tricky situation for Virat and Co. on a Day 5 Pune pitch. Is Virat looking to risk that? Tail-enders Keshav Maharaj and Vernon Philander set an example of gutsy batsmanship as South Africa fought hard against a quality attack but could not stop India from taking a massive 326-run lead on the third day. While a total of 275 in 105.4 overs is far from India's mammoth first innings total of 601, the 109-run ninth wicket stand between Philander (44 not out) and an injured Maharaj (72) showed what the top-order could have done had they shown some stomach for fight. It will be interesting to see if India captain Virat Kohli enforces a follow on or give his bowlers more rest before unleashing them, eyeing a series-clinching victory in the three-match rubber. The duo ducked the bouncers, defended doggedly and attacked the loose deliveries as the Indian bowling attack suddenly lacked answers during the final session of the third day, which certainly belonged to the Proteas. Coming together at 162 for eight, Philander-Maharaj pair not only had a century- plus stand but more importantly consumed 43.1 overs, taking away a lot of second innings overs from India. Ashwin, who had the best figures of four for 69 in 28.4 overs, lauded the fighting ninth wicket stand between the lower-order batsmen. "I think the myth of tail-enders is over-stated and when he (tail-ender) bats well, he bats well. Nowadays, nobody is really a mug with the bat. In our team also, everybody bats pretty well till No 11," he said. Asked if India will enforce the follow-on, Ashwin said that it will be the captain's prerogative. "At least, I haven't thought about the follow-on. I think the captain will decide overnight on what he should be doing. It is also important, how bowlers recover, tomorrow morning."
