India vs South Africa Highlights, 3rd Test: Bad light forces early stumps on Day 2, South Africa 9/2

Bad light forced early stumps on the second day of the third and final Test between India and South Africa in Ranchi on Sunday. Poor visibility meant the India players walked back to the dressing room barely five overs into the South African first innings after the tea break. India declared their first innings at 497/9 after Rohit Sharma (212) struck his maiden double century while Ajinkya Rahane (115) scored his first hundred at home in three years. Tea was also called when skipper Virat Kohli called his last two batsmen back. Pacers Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami sent back both the openers as South Africa finished the day at 9 for 2, trailing India by 488 runs in the first innings. : And now the covers are coming on. Further play seems improbable now. : The players have walked off the field but umpires are still out in the middle accessing the situation. : And, bad light has interrupted play once again. Umpires had asked Virat Kohli to go with the spinners as it was getting too dark. Kohli obliged but the umpires now feel that the light has deteriorated further. The play has been stopped for now. However, there are chances of resumption if light gets better. : Shahbaz Nadeem starts off his Test debut with a maiden. Right on the mark in his first over. It's spin from both ends now as Ravindra Jadeja comes into the attack. Wicket on the final ball of the over for Umesh Yadav. What a start this has been from India pacers. Peach of a delivery from Umesh as Quinton de Kock he no clue about that one. Gets the glove and he departs after scoring 4 runs. Both the Proteas openers are back in the hut. Four byes off the first ball and wicket off the second! Eventful start to the South Africa innings. The last session of the day gets underway, with Mohammed Shami running in with the red cherry in his hand. Rohit Sharma's (212) maiden double Test ton was the highlight of the second session as India declared their first innings on 497/9 at tea on Day 2 of the Ranchi Test. Resuming on 199 post lunch, Rohit smacked Lungi Ngidi for a six in the deep to get to the landmark figure. But soon after that, Kagiso Rabada ended the stupendous effort from Rohit. Ravindra Jadeja and Wriddhiman Saha then took the India innings forward but Saha was castled by George Linde. Jadeja too departed after scoring 51. Ashwin failed to make an impact with the bat but Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami cameos took India to 497/9. Linde (4/133) was the most successful bowler for South Africa. And, Virat Kohli has called his batsmen back! India have declared their first innings on What an effort this has been from the lower order batsmen. Umesh Yadav 10-ball 31 blitz propelled India to 497. And Virat and Co. feels that's sufficient for them. Mohammed Shami joins the party. It's raining fours and sixes at the moment in Ranchi. Shami charges down the track against Dane Piedt and hoicks it straight down to collect his first maximum. Umesh Yadav blitzkrieg finally comes to an end. After smacking three sixes off George Linde he goes for the fourth one but mistimes. Skies the ball and wicket keeper Klaasen makes no mistake. 31 off just 10 balls as his entertaining knock comes to an end. Umesh Yadav is in and he makes it clear what he is sent in to do. He puts the wheels on India's scorecard that now reads And Jadeja falls soon after reaching his fifty, out for 51 as Linde gets his third wicket. The 13th of his Test career! The all-rounder's good run with the bat continues. India's 450 up as well, Jadeja (46*) breaks the shackles off the last ball of the over, as the left-hander gets down on his knee and drags Linde from outside the off-stump to hit him through mid-wicket for his fourth four. Jadeja is into the 40s but India's scoring rate has hit a roadblock of sorts. Just 12 runs in the last five overs. SA have put together a couple of quiet overs as runs dry up for the Indian pair of Jadeja (33*) and Ashwin (3*). Through the gate. George Linde scalps Wriddhiman Saha for 24. Rohit Sharma looked unstoppable once again as the hitman crossed his previous best score (177) in the morning session on Day 2 of the third and final Test in Ranchi. India were 357/4 at lunch with Rohit unbeaten on 199, just a run away from his maiden Test double ton, alongside Ravindra Jadeja on 15. Resuming on 274/3 both Ajinkya Rahane (115) and Rohit started cautiously but then picked up the pace. Both took on the South Africa bowlers and smacked them all over the park. In the process, Rahane got to his 11th Test ton -- his first on home soil since 2016 -- off 169 balls. Rohit followed it up with his second 150-plus total of the series. After his ton Rahane looked to accelerate but edged one off George Linde to wicket-keeper Heinrich Klaasen. Rohit smacked a couple of boundaries in the penultimate over to breeze through the 190s but remained unbeaten on 199 in the final over of the first session. George Linde was the lone wicket-taker for South Africa in the morning session as he broke a mammoth 267-run fourth wicket stand between Rahane and Rohit. Rohit Sharma continued his sensational run as a Test opener with his third hundred of the series, allowing India to regain control of the proceedings after a top-order collapse in the third and final game against South Africa. With India reduced to 39 for three, Rohit (117 batting off 164 balls) and Ajinkya Rahane (83 batting off 135) shared an unbeaten 185-run stand to stage the home team's remarkable recovery. India were 224 for three before bad light, followed by rain, forced an early end to play on day one with only six overs possible in the final session. With his stellar effort, Rohit, who hammered 14 boundaries and four sixes, became the first Indian opener since Sunil Gavaskar to score more than two centuries in a Test series. Gavaskar had achieved the feat way back in 1970. Rohit's Test century number six came with a massive six off spinner Dane Piedt. It was a typical knock from India's limited overs captain as he exercised caution when Kagiso Rabada was steaming in the morning before going for his strokes. If that was not enough, Rahane matched him at the other end and brought up his 21st half-century off just 70 balls. Piedt, who was included in place of Senuran Muthusamy, cut a sorry figure against Rohit's fury, giving away 43 runs in his six overs. Debutant left-arm spinner George Linde, who replaced an injured Keshav Maharaj, ended the day with tidy figures of 11-1-40-0. Such was the Indian duo's dominance after lunch that Rabada, who had a fiery opening spell of 7-4-15-2, looked listless in the second spell that read 4-0-30-0. Rahane matched Sharma shot for shot and at one point even had a better strike rate than his explosive Mumbai partner as he notched up his fastest half-century in India. Sharma, however, had a testing opening session as he survived on seven after reviewing an LBW successfully. He also survived a run out chance when he was out of crease but Zubayr Hamza's throw from point missed the stumps. Uneven bounce with a few staying really low greeted the Indian openers in the morning as Rabada and Lungi Ngidi made full use of the conditions to give the visitors their best start of the series. Rabada got rid of opener Mayank Agarwal (10) and Cheteshwar Pujara (0) inside the first-hour of play. The first breakthrough came in Rabada's third over when the the pacer swung it away with Agarwal edging it to Dean Elgar at third slip. Rabada went on to dismiss Pujara for a duck in his fifth over following a successful review by the South Africans after the on-field umpire Richard Illingworth turned down an lbw appeal. But it was Nortje who earned the biggest wicket as he sent back Pune Test's double centurion Kohli after the skipper failed to read one that came back in sharply. Kohli took the review but only to be turned down with an umpire's call and the skipper went back to the pavillion frustrated.
